SILVER POPPIES TO HONOUR OUR LIVING VETERANS
The Silver Poppy Project!
HERE'S HOW THIS IDEA CAME ABOUT
The Silver Poppy Project first bloomed in 2014 & is still growing into 2020!
  • In 2014, Silver Poppies were commissioned by the Mayor Of North Down, Peter Martin: In 2014, the then Mayor of North Down in N. Ireland - Peter Martin - came to me asking if I could create silver poppies. He had the idea of presenting them to 3 local living veterans to honour them at a special ceremony in Bangor on the 12 October 2014.
  • THREE Veterans local to Bangor, N Ireland were the first to receive their Silver Poppies in Oct 2014: I handmade 3 sterling silver poppies which were presented to WW2 veterans Gunnerman Jim Lennon, Flight Engineer Rex Armstong and Telegraphist Fred Osbourne (whose award was accepted by Mr Norman Leslie).
  • In 2019 Councillor Peter Martin approached me again to see if I could 'grow' another set of Silver Poppies: In mid-2019, Councillor Peter Martin came to me again asking if I could create a second set of silver poppies. This time he had the idea of presenting them to ALL living WW2 veterans in the local council area.
  • TWENTY FIVE Veterans local to North Down & Ards in N Ireland received their Silver Poppies in Nov 2019: When this stage of the project started Peter thought their might be around 10 living veterans at the most. But this soon grew to x25 amazing men and women whom  and were aged between 93 - 101!
  • The Silver Poppy Project continues into in 2020: Yes! theres already x10 silver poppies (and counting) to be awarded to a further set of living veterans in another local N. Ireland council for VE-Day in May 2020!

Hand-Making A Silver Poppy Of Remembrance!
 WAIT THERE'S MORE
Here's the military concept behind your silver poppies!
 MY DESIGNS ARE BASED ON...
  • The Overall Shape Is Based On The 'Flanders Poppy': The design of the poppy is based on whats called a ‘Flanders Poppy’ known as ‘Papaver Rhoeas’. Red ‘frilly’ petals: a large outer petal with a more cupped inner one; an inner ribbed stamen; and a tall organic stem.
  • Components Are Based Around The Date Of D-Day: Parts of my design are based around the date of D-Day - 06.06.44 - and uses the number 6 or multiplier of it. So theres 6 parts to the poppies - inner petal, outer petal, inner stamen, 2 spacers and a stem. All hand made, hand formed and hand hammered!
  • Stamens Are Based On The No 6: I designed the inner stamen on the computer to be based on the number 6: 6 stamens, either 6 or 12 balls and 12 ribs.
  • Stems Are Based On The '21 Gun Salute': The stem is 21cm long to represent the ’21 gun salute'. The stems are hand hammered and gently curved to look like an organic stem.
  • Bases Are Based On The Shape Of A Senate Half, The Date Of D-Day & Made In Military-Inspired Oak: The bases are based on the typical shape of a senate half / war memorial that is tall and steps in. I chose oak for the material as there is a long military history connected to oak dating back to roman times. The dimensions of the base are approx 88cm wide and is double the date of the year of d-day of 44. The base is 70cm tall as its the 7th element. They have been wax finished to show the natural grain of the wood which will allow them to darken over time.
  • Plaques Are Based On A Traditional Material: The plaques on each poppy are constructed from brass - a traditional and durable material used in military signage and awards. Each plaque is individually etched with a message personal to the recipient.

Hi! I'm Sarah McAleer Jewellerysmith!
Bespoke Goldsmith & Poppy Maker!

When I'm not making poppies, I'm designing high end custom jewellery for women who are old enough to know EXACTLY what they want!

In fact, I've been adorning and working with strong minded women and their families for over 27 years!

I don't believe that jewellery (or my poppies) should be kept in a box, I believe they should be worn (or looked at) every day - loved, treasured and admired!

I'm honoured to create something just for YOU!
